Rarer than the acute one. Lumbago also affects the work force as it causes people to lose a certain number of workdays on a yearly basis. From this social point of view, it causes large direct and indirect costs every year. With each year there is a growing number of surgeries performed in order to treat low back pain.

The symptoms of lumbago include a sharp, dull, stabbing, aching or throbbing pain which sometimes can be connected to the pain in the buttock or the leg. Sometimes actions such as twisting, bending, walking or lifting can worsen the situation. Standing or sitting also usually worsens the situation, while lying down is helpful in most cases. Sometimes these symptoms can be accompanied by weight loss, urinary problems and a loss of sensation and in these cases, one should ask for immediate medical attention.

Symptoms and Signs of Lumbago in TCM
1. Pattern of Cold and Damp
Main symptoms: low back pain, uncomfortable when turning round, aggravation at rainy days, white and greasy days, deep pulse.

2. Pattern of Damp and Heat
Main symptoms: heat sensation in the painful areas, aggravation at rainy or sunny days, pain relief after activity, scant urine, slip pulse.

3. Pattern of Kidney Deficiency
Main symptoms: fatigue, aversion to cold, weakness of waist and knees, impotence, emission, infertility, poor appetite, frequent urination, white and light tongue coating, deep pulse.
