What causes pain in the urethra?

Health Description
Health Consultation Description:
I had a mild discomfort in my urethra with Mild pain in the left testicle extending to left leg. There was no burning or itching while passing urine. It has however subsided now on its own. My urine routine test is normal. I had asked a question over here last week and the doctor had suggested that I should get my IGg test done for heroes zoster. The herpes zoster test has come positive. I remember getting herpes zoster in 1989 on my back. Do you think the above symptoms could be due to herpes? If yes then shouldn't I get tested for herpes simplex instead? There is however nothing on my genitals to indicate that it is herpes. Also can I resume sexual relations with my wife under such circumstances? She has no symptoms up-till now.

Condition analysis:
Hello, Welcome and thanks for posting your query to the forum. I can understand your concern for discomfort in urethra with pain in the left testicle extending to left leg. After analyzing the complete situation I can make out that none of your symptoms are related to either of herpes zoster or with herpes simplex. Let me elaborate my findings and facts related to your condition: To tell you medically -Both herpes zoster and Herpes simplex are same group of illness caused by same group of different viruses. Herpes simplex manifest itself as very small vesicles (fluid filled blisters) which remains for a day or two and then forms ulcers which are quite painful. These ulcers then heal in next 5-7 days.

To begin with also these vesicles are quite painful and itchy with discomfort and once the vesicles burst in a day or two then the ulcers which are formed are quite painful for next 4-5 days. So the symptoms can never go unnoticed. It is typically seen as "fluid filled multiple vesicles present closely in a grouped manner" which you can see on net as a ready reference. Similarly there are grouped ulcers and not just mild pain or discomfort. In herpes zoster there are large blisters which occurs only on one side of body. There is very severe pain to start with and then forms the large blisters which remains for 7-14 days of period. Now correlating all the facts with your history you can make out that your condition has no match with any type of herpes lesions. None of your symptoms matches with above conditions.

Though unilateral (on one side) pain extending down may be related to herpes zoster and can be considered as an important differential condition initially but it is the presence of small vesicles and blisters which helps in identifying and differentiating both the conditions very easily. The previous suggestion of herpes zoster might had been given presumptively on the same basis. But as there had been no any blisters or severe pain so any of these conditions are presently out of our context. Now you must be worried that why you have had discomfort in urethra with pain in the left testicle extending to left leg. This can be due to mild infection or very small stone or any type of infection of trivial nature which appeared and disappeared by its own.

As presently there are no any symptoms so you should not be worried about any of the above condition including herpes simplex and zoster too. You can very well resume your normal relations with your wife as you do not have any type of infective condition. I hope these information will help you. I will be glad to answer any further queries. "Wish you good health" Regards, Dr Sanjay Kumar Kanodia MD (Dermatology & Sexually transmitted diseases)
