Hemostatic Chinese Medicinal Herbs
Any medicines that mainly stop various bleeding internally or externally are called hemostatic Chinese medicinal herbs. They separately have the different actions of cooling the blood and stopping bleeding, stopping bleeding by their astringent property, by removing obstructions and by warming channels, etc.. They are mainly indicated for bleeding from all parts of the body, such as hemoptysis, haematemesis, epistaxis, hematuria, bloody stools, metrorrhagia and metrostaxis, purpura and traumatic bleeding.
So, clinically, one must choose proper hemostatic Chinese medicinal herbs that are combined with each other, according to the bleeding causes and specific symptoms and signs, so as to enhance the effects. For example, for bleeding due to blood heat, blood cooling hemostatic herbs should be selected, and combined with those for clearing away heat and cooling the blood; for hyperactivity of yang due to deficiency of yin, those for nourishing yin and suppressing the sthenic yang should be used together; for bleeding due to blood stasis, those for removing blood stasis to stop bleeding should be mainly selected, and used together with those for circulating qi and the blood; for bleeding due to deficiency and cold, those for warming yang, replenishing qi and strengthening the function of the spleen should be used together; for excessive bleeding followed by exhaustion of qi, those for supplementing primordial qi should be used so as to supplement qi.
When one applies the blood cooling hemostatic and astringent hemostatic herbs, he/she must pay attention to whether there is blood stasis or not. If bleeding is caused by remaining of blood stasis, one must add herbs for circulating blood to remove blood stasis according to the conditions, while herbs cannot be simply used for relieving bleeding and further more astringent hemostatic and blood cooling hemostatic herbs cannot be chosen so as to prevent blood stasis.
