Using foot massage to treat Postpartum fainting

This is an acute disease occurring suddenly after childbirth. Its symptoms include dizziness, vertigo, difficulty in sitting up, chest distress, nausea, vomiting, accumulation of sputum in throat, shortness of breath, restlessness, and even loss of consciousness.
   
Differential diagnosis: Patients with blood deficiency may suffer from sudden onset of vertigo, pale complexion, heart palpitations, gradual loss of consciousness with eyes closed and mouth opened, extremely cold limbs, profuse cold sweating, pale tongue without coating, and feeble, floating or large and weak pulse. And patients with blood stasis may suffer from scanty or no lochia after childbirth, paroxysmal pain in lower abdomen, severe distension in epigastric region, shortness of breath and dyspnea, coma and loss of consciousness with hands clenched and jaw locked, cyanotic face, lips and tongue, and uneven pulse.
   
Treatment:
Foot massage: The massage is applied to kidney (22), heart (33), spleen (34), ureter (23) and adrenal gland (21) reflecting areas. The foot is held in one hand by the physician and the pressure is applied by the knuckle of the first interphalangeal joint of the other index finger on the reflecting areas 3-4 times (Fig. 88).
   
Foot acupuncture:
1) Meridianal acupoints: At Yongquan (KI 1), Rangu (KI 2), Zhaohai (KI 6) and Xingjian (LR2) acupoints, a reinforcing acupuncture technique or moxibustion is applied to patients with blood deficiency, and a reducing technique is applied to
patients with blood stasis. The needles are retained for 15 to 20 minutes, and moxibustion is applied for 15 minutes.

2) Extra acupoints: At Xiaozhiiian (tip of little toe) and Dazhi Jumao (EX-F 14) acupoints, a reinforcing technique of acupuncture or moxibustion in applied to patients with blood deficiency, and a reducing technique is applied to patients with blood stasis. The needles are retained for 15 to 20 minutes, and moxibustion is applied for 15 minutes.

3) Foot acupuncture: A balanced reinforce-reducing technique of acupuncture is applied at Vertigo (FA-M 1) and Kidney (FA-P 14) acupoints and the needles are retained for 20 minutes. Moxibustion is applied for 10 to 15 minutes to deficient type patients.
  
External application of drugs:
1) Deficiency of qi and blood: The powder of Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Danggui), Radix Astragali (Huangqi), Radix Codonopsis (Dangshen), Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae (Baizhu), Radix Rehmanniae Praeparata (Shudihuang), Poria with Hostwood (Fushen), Semen Ziziphi Spinosae (Suanzaoren)">Semen Ziziphi Spinosae (Suanzaoren), Semen Biotae (Baiziren)  32 gm each and Banxia (pinellia tuber), Chenpi (tangerine peel), Maidong (lily-turf) and Gancao (licorice root) 15 gm each is applied to heart (33), kidney (22), spleen (34), adrenal gland (21) and ureter (23) reflecting areas.

2) Blood stasis: Danggui (Chinese Angelica root), Chuanxiong (Szechuan lovage), Taoren (peach kernel), Jiangtan (charred ginger), Gancao (licorice), Honghua (safflower), Yanhusuo (corydalis tuber), Rougui (cinnamon bark), Wulingzhi (trogopterus dung) and Xiangfu (nut-grass) 15 gm each are fried in sesame oil with Huangdan (yellow lead) to prepare a paste for application to spleen (34) and kidney (22) reflecting areas.
