Ingredients:
No. 1 Shayuanjili (Semen Astragali Complanti) 60 g;
No. 2 Qianshi (Semen Euryales) 60 g;
No. 3 Lianxu (Stamen Nelumbinis) 60 g;
No. 4 Duanlonggu (Os Draconis) (calcined) 30 g;
No. 5 Duanmuli (Concha Ostreae) (calcined) 30 g.

Administration:
Grind the above drugs into fine powder, which is then mixed with the paste of Lianzi (Semen Nelumbinis) and made into pills; take 9 g each time and twice daily with light salty water when stomach is empty. Or add proper amount of Lianzi (Semen Nelumbinis) to the above to make decoction for oral application with dosages in proportion to the original recipe.

Actions: Nourishing the kidney and astringing emission.

Clinical Application:
This recipe is indicated for syndrome of seminal emission due to deficiency of the kidney, marked by spermatorrhea, frequent diarrhea, soreness of waist, tinnitus, mental fatigue, lassitude, pale tongue with whitish fur, thready feeble pulse. It is applicable to spermatorrhea, prospermia, enuresis, chyluria and others, which belong to instability of kidney-qi due to kidney-deficiency. In case of severe soreness of waist and knees, add Duzhong (Cortex Eucommiae) and Xuduan (Radix Dipsaci), to invigorate the kidney and strengthen waist and knees. In case of fire failing to warm earth with loose stool, add Buguzhi (Fructus Psoraleae ) and Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae) to warm kidney-yang and relieve diarrhea.

In case of scanty essence due to deficiency of the kidney and constipation due to dryness of intestines, add Shudihuang (Rhizoma Rehmanniae Praeparatae) and Roucongrong (Herba Listanchis) to reinforce the kidney and supplement essence as well as nourish blood and moisten the intestines.

Elucidation:
The syndrome is caused by failure of the kidney in storing essence due to kidney deficiency and spontaneous discharge of sperms. It should be treated by reinforcing the kidney and arresting emission. The first ingredient can not only reinforce the kidney, but also restrain emission, acting as monarch drug. As minister drugs, ingredient No. 2 and Lianzi (Semen Nelumbinis) enhance the effect of the monarch drug. The rest three ingredients are all major astringent drugs for restraining sperms, and function as adjuvant drugs, the combination with the monarch and minister drugs of which achieves an even better result.

The combined application of all ingredients can arrest spontaneous discharge of sperms on the one hand, and invigorate kidney-yang on the other hand, giving consideration to both the primary and secondary aspects of the disease with stress laid on astringing nocturnal seminal emission, so this recipe is named the Gold Lock.

Cautions:
This recipe is contraindicated for spermatorrhea due to hyperactivity of the ministerial fire (kidney-fire) or due to downward flow of damp heat.
