Ingredients:
No. 1 Roudoukou (Semen Myristicae) 60 g;
No. 2 Buguzhi (Fructus Psoraleae) 120 g;
No. 3 Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae) 60 g;
No. 4 Wuzhuyu (Fructus Evodiae) 30 g.
Administration:
Grind the above drugs into powder, which is then mixed with 240 g of Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) and 50 pieces of Dazao (Fructus Ziziphi Jujubae) after they are boiled and the cores removed; make the mixture into pills and take 6 - 9 g each time and twice daily. Or otherwise make into decoction with dosages in proportion to the original recipe.
Actions:
Warming and invigorating the spleen and kidney and astringing the intestine to stop diarrhea.
Clinical Application:
This recipe is indicated for syndrome of diarrhea before dawn, marked by diarrhea at dawn, anorexia, or protracted diarrhea, abdominal pain relieved with warmth, soreness of waist and cold limbs, mental fatigue and lassitude, pale and large tongue with thin whitish fur, deep slow and feeble pulse. It is applicable to chronic or allergic colitis with morning diarrhea, which belong to yang deficiency of the spleen and kidney. In case of severe soreness of waist and cold limbs, add Fuzi (Radix Aconiti Praeparatae) and Rougui (Cortex Cinnamomi) to enhance the effect of warming and activating kidney-yang. If concomitant with prolapse of rectum, add Huangqi (Radix Astragali seu Hedysari) and Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae) to replenish qi and lifting up yang
Elucidation:
The syndrome is caused by deficiency of kidney-yang, leading to failure of fire in warming earth. It should be treated by warming and invigorating the spleen and kidney to relieve diarrhea. As monarch drug, Ingredient No. 2 is capable of activating kidney-yang and warming the spleen to relieve diarrhea. The first ingredient acts as minister drug to warm the kidney and spleen. Ingredient No. 3 has an astringent and antidiarrheal action, and No. 4 bears the effect of warming the interior and dispelling cold. Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) and Dazao (Fructus Ziziphi Jujubae) are effective in invigorating the spleen and regulating the stomach, and strengthen the effects of the monarch and minister drugs, serving as adjuvant drugs together with No. 3 and No. 4.
Both this recipe and Zhenren Yangzang Tang possess the action of consolidating the intestines and relieving diarrhea and are both used for treating protracted diarrhea and prolapse of rectum. But the former is good at warming the kidney and spleen, and a typical recipe for morning diarrhea caused by deficiency of the kidney-yang and failure of fire to warm earth. While the latter focuses on warming the spleen-yang and is fit for protracted diarrhea due to impairment of the spleen and failure of the intestine in astringent action.
Cautions:
It is contraindicated for cases concomitant with damp heat manifesting yellowish and greasy fur.
