Elucidation:
The syndrome is caused by attack of phlegm-heat in the interior and disharmony between the gallbladder and the stomach. It should be treated by regulating the flow of qi to remove phlegm, clearing away heat from the gallbladder and regulating the stomach. No. 1 is the monarch drug in the recipe, which can eliminate dampness and phlegm as well as descend qi and regulate the stomach. No. 2 functions as minister drug to clear away heat from the gallbladder, regulate the stomach, arrest vomiting and relieve vexation.
No. 3 and No. 4 possess the action of regulating the flow of qi so as to reduce phlegm, while No. 6 has the function of reinforcing the spleen and inducing diuresis so that phlegm is never to be generated when dampness is eliminated, the three playing the part of adjuvant drugs. No. 5 is used as guiding drug to invigorate the spleen and mediate drug properties.
