Ingredients:
No. 1 Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) 1 500 g;
No. 2 Hanshuishi (Calcitum) 1 500 g;
No. 3 Huashi (Talcum) 1 500 g;
No. 4 Cishi (Magnetitum) 1 500 g;
No. 5 Shuiniujiao (Cornu Bubali) (concentrated powder) 5 000 g [originally Xijiao(Cornu Rhinocerotis)] ;
No. 6 Lingyangjiao (Cornu Saigae Tattaricae) 150 g;
No. 7 Qingmuxiang (Radix Aristolochiae) 150;
No. 8 Chenxiang (Lignum Aquilariae Resinatum) 150 g,
No. 9 Xuanshen (Radix Scrophulariae) 500 g;
No. 10 Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae) 500 g;
No. 11 Zhigancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Praeparatae) 250 g;
No. 12 Dingxiang (Flos Caryophylli) 30 g;
No. 13 Mangxiao (Natrii Sulphas) 1 000 g;
No. 14 Xiaoshi (Nitrum) 1 000 g;
No. 15 Shexiang (Moschus) 1.5 g; (Generally use artificial one)
No. 16 Zhusha (Cinnabaris) 90 g.

Administration:
Grind the above into extremely fine powder and pack it in vials after mixed evenly, weighing 1.5 g each. Take orally 1.5 - 3 g each time and twice daily.

Actions:
Restoring consciousness by clearing away heat, stopping wind to relieve convulsion.

Clinical Application:
This recipe is indicated for syndrome of stirring of wind due to heat invading pericardium, marked by high fever, dysphoria, coma with delirium, convulsion, macular eruption, hematemesis, profuse thirst, parched lips and dryness of teeth, dark urine, constipation, reddened or deep-red tongue with dry yellowish fur, rapid and forceful or taut pulse. It is applicable to febrile and infectious diseases, such as epidemic cerebrospinal meningitis, crisis of epidemic encephalitis B, severe pneumonia, scarlet fever, and hematosepsis due to pyogenic infection. It is also indicated in high fever, coma and spasm as the result of hepatic coma, infantile hyperpyretic convulsion, and excessive heat from infantile measles.

Elucidation:
The syndrome is caused by excessive heat invading the pericardium and wind stirring up due to excessive heat, It should be treated with the method of clearing away heat and calming wind to restore mentality and relieve convulsion. Ingredient No. 5 is capable of clearing away heat from the heart and blood, No. 6 calming the liver-wind to relieve convulsion, and No. 15 restoring consciousness with aromatic flavor. The three are monarch drugs in this recipe and together constitute the result of clearing away heat from the heart and liver, inducing resuscitation and relieving convulsion or spasm.

Ingredients No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 are extremely cold in nature and capable of clearing away heat, while No. 9 and No. 10 can eliminate heat and toxins, the five together playing the role of minister drugs. Ingredients No. 7, No. 8 and No. 12 bear the action of promoting flow of qi and assisting No. 15 in restoring consciousness, while No. 16 and No. 4 are heavy in nature and can tranquilize mind and help No. 6 suppress the hyperactive liver-yang. Ingredients No. 13 and No. 14 possess the effect of purging and descending accumulated heat.

These seven ingredients are used as adjuvant drugs. Ingredient No. 11 serves as guiding drug, which supplements qi and regulates the middle-energizer to prevent drugs of cold or cool nature from impairing the stomach on the one hand, and mediates the properties of other drugs on the other. Gold, which is heavy and capable of restoring consciousness, used to be included in the original recipe, but has now been deleted from Chinese Pharmacopoeia.
