Elucidation:
The syndrome is the result of extreme anxiety or contemplation, leading to impairment of heart-yin and dysfunction of liver-qi. It should be treated by nourishing the heart and liver to relieve mental stress and pain. The second ingredient functions as monarch drug to nourish heart-yin and relieve dysphoria. The first ingredient in a big dosage is meant to invigorate heart-qi and regulate the middle-energizer and used as minister drug. The last ingredient acts as adjuvant drug with the effect of supplementing qi to regulate the middle-energizer, and moistening dryness to relieve pain. Combination of the three is a common recipe in the treatment of hysteria, which is sweet and moist in nature and mild in its tonic action.
