Acupuncture Point Shenfeng (KI23)
Location:
Supine position; on the vertical line passing through the midpoint between mid-sternal line and midclavicular line, in the 4th intercostal space.

Function:
Regulating qi, promoting lactation, and lowering the adverse flow of qi.

Regional Anatomy:
Skin-subcutaneous tissue-greter pectoral muscle.
In the superficial layer, there are the anterior cutaneous branches of the 4th intercostal nerve and the perforating branches of the internal thoracic artery and vein. In the deep layer, there are the branches of the medial and lateral pectoral nerves.

Indications:
Bronchitis, nasal obstrution, hyposmia, intercostal neuralgia, pleuritis, mastitis, vomiting, anorexia, spasm of the straight muscle of abdomen.

Prescription:
Combined use with Tianzong (SI 11) for treatment of mastitis; and with Neiguan (PC6) Luo-Connecting Point the Eight Confluent Point) for treatment of tachycardia.

Methods:
Insert the needle horizontally, 0.3-0.5 cun deep; needling response: local numbness and distension; moxibustion: using 3-5 moxa-cones, or mild moxibustion for 15 min.
Note:
Shenfeng (KI23) Don`t puncture deeply, or else, on right side, the needle would penetrate the external intercostal membrane-the internal intercostal muscles-the parietal pleura-the pleural cavity-the visceral pleura and the lung by its tip, and cause an injury to lung, leading to the pneumatothorax; while, on left side, it would penetrate the external intercostal membrane-the internal intercostal muscles-the fibrous pericardial cavity-the visceral layer of serous pericardium ( the epicardium )-the wall of right ventricle-the right ventricle by its tip, and cause an injury to heart.
