Acupuncture Point Shenshu (BL23)
Location:
Lie pronely; firstly, locate MingmenGV4(Mingmen (GV4)) which is opposite to the navel basically, 1.5 cun apart from MingmenGV4(GV4) laterally.
Function:
Tonifying the kidney for strengthening the back, invigorating yang to inducing diuresis, and improving actuity of audition and vision.
Regional Anatomy:
Skin-subcutaneous tissue-aponeurosis of latissimus muscle of the back-superficial layer of thoracolumbar fascia-erector spinal muscle.
In the superficial layer, there are the cutaneous branches of the posterior branches of the 2nd and 3rd lumbar nerves and the accompanying arteries and veins. In the deep layer, there are the muscular branches of the posterior branches of the 2nd and 3rd lumbar nerves and the branches or tributaries of the dorsal branches of the related lumbar arteries and veins.
Indications:
Nephritis, renal colic, nephroptosia, enuresis, urinary tract infection, paralysis or spasm of bladder sphincter, Impotence, prospermia, spermatorrhea, aspermia, Lumbago, hydrops, hepatomegaly, Irregular Menstruation, gastric hemorrhage, intestinal hemorrhage, hemorrhoid, Asthma, deafness, anemia, soft tissue injury in the lumbar region, intercostal neuralgia, and hemiparalysis.
Prescription:
Combined use with GuanyuanCV4 (Guanyuan (CV4) Front-Mu Point of the SmallIntestine) for treatmen of impotence and spermatorrhea; with SanyinjiaoSP6 (Sanyinjiao (SP6)) for treatmen of diabetes; with WeizhongBL40 (Weizhong (BL 40) He-Sea Point, Lower Confluent Point) for treatmen of lumbar muscle strain; with moxibustion on ShenshuBL23 (Shenshu (BL23)), GuanyuanCV4 (CV4), ZhongjiCV3 (Acupuncture Single Point Zhongji (CV3) Front-Mu Point of the Bladder) while puncturing SanyinjiaoSP6 (SP6) for treatmen of enuresis; with GuanyuanCV4 (CV4), QihaiCV6 (Qihai (CV6)), ZhongjiCV3 (CV3), ZusanliST36 (Zusanli (ST36) He-Sea Point), SanyinjiaoSP6 (SP6), XuehaiSP10 (Xuehai (SP 10)) for treatmenof male infertility.
Methods:
Insert the needle perpendicularlly, 0.5-1 cun deep; needling response: local numbness and distension, radiating toward the buttock and lower extremity; moxibustion: using 3-5 moxa-cones, or mild moxibustion for 20 min.

Its related organ is the kidney in the abdominal cavity.
