Diarrhea refers to a condition marked by frequent bowel movement, loose or watery feces, accompanied by abdominal pain and lassitude. It can be divided into acute and chronic types. Acute Diarrhea is generally caused by invasion of cold-damp, or summer heat-damp or retention of food in the intestine and stomach, leading to dysfunction of transmission, mixture of water and food, or the failure of separation between the clear from the turbid. The principle of treatment is to eliminate the pathogenic factors, and regulate the intestine and stomach. The points of Hand and Foot Yangming Meridians are selected as the main points, such as Zhongwan (Ren 12), Tianshu (ST 25), Hegu (LI 4), Shangjuxu (ST 37) and Yinlingquan (SP9), which are punctured with reducing technique. Moxibustion is added for cold-damp syndrome, and bleeding for heat syndrome. Chronic diarrhea is generally caused by dysfunction of zang-fu organs, weakness of the spleen and stomach, the decline of Mingmen fire and failure of the spleen to be warmed, counteraction of the liver on the spleen, leading to dysfunction of the latter in transportation and transformation, failure of separation of the clear from the turbid, which both move to the intestine together. The principle of treatment is to build up the spleen, sooth the liver and warm the kidney. The points of Ren Meridian, Foot Yangming Meridian and Back-Shu points are selected as the main points, such as Zhongwan (Ren 12), Tianshu (ST 25), Zusanli (ST 36), Pishu (BL20), Guanyuanshu (BL 26), Ganshu (BL 18) and Taichong (LR 3), which are punctured with reinforcing technique, or plus moxibustion. Those Western diseases, like acute and chronic diarrhea, intestinal dysfunction, allergy of the colon, and tuberculosis of the intestine, can be treated by reference to this syndrome.
