The disease tends to occur in aged people and in people having a weak constitution due to chronic disease. In mild cases, the rectum protrudes after bowel movement, but the protrusion corrects itself; in severe cases, the rectum protrudes after coughing, sneezing or even slight exertion to defecate, and the rectum cannot move back and has to be supported to retum to its correct location. The disease is mainly due to the deficiency of primary qi, the sinking of qi of the middle Jiao (triple energizer) and weakness in contraction. To solve the problem, it is beneficial to tonify qi of the middle Jiao (triple energizer), lifting up qi and promoting contraction. The points of the Governor Vessel and the Back-shu point of the large intestine are intended to be the main points. Examples are Baihui (GV 20), Dachangshu (BL25), Changqiang (GV 1) and Chengshan (BL57). The reinforcing needling technique should be used. If acupuncture can be applied together with moxibustion, the result tends to be more satisfactory.
