Gonorrhea usually refers to a suppurative infection of the urinosexual system caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae (gonococcus in brief) and also includes the ocular, pharyngeal, rectal, pelvic and disseminated gonococcal infection. Because of its short incubation period and strong infection, this disease can spread swiftly in the short period to cause serious results, such as sterility in females, infertility in males, urethrostenosis, blindness, etc. Therefore, gonorrhea is one of the sexually transmitted diseases emphatically prevented and treated in China. Clinically,gonorrhea is manifested mostly by urethritis, characterized by urgency, pain and frequency in urination, purulent secretion in the meatus urinarius. Gonorrhea is mainly transmitted directly by sexual intercourse and occasionally infected indirectly by the bacteria-bearing clothes, chamber pot and bathtub. Gonorrhea in pregnant women can cause infection in the amniotic cavity and fetus.
