Constipation refers to a disorder of prolonged defecation or difficult defecation. This disorder is mainly caused by improper diet, excessive anxiety, lack of physical exercise, constitutional yang preponderance and weak constitution after an illness. The pathogenesis of constipation is mainly due to the dysfunction of the large intestine in transmission and also related to the dysfunction of the spleen, stomach, liver and kidney. Pathologically it can be divided into excess type and deficiency type. The excess type includes heat accumulation in the intestine and stomach and qi stagnation; while the deficiency type includes yang qi deficiency and yin-blood deficiency. The disorder can be seen in functional constipation, intestinal neurosis and constipation due to the side effect of drugs in western medicine.
