TCM Treatment Evaluation for Diarrhea

TCM Treatment Evaluation for Diarrhea
Evidence that TCM has been used for digestive disorders can be found in early medical literature dating back to 3 AD, where specific acupuncture points and herbal formulas for borborygmus (rumbling or gurgling in the intestines), abdominal pain and diarrhea with pain are discussed.

According to TCM theory, most digestive disorders are due to disharmony in the spleen and stomach. The spleen plays a central part in the health and vitality of the body, taking a lead role in the assimilation of nutrients and maintenance of physical strength. It turns digested food from the stomach into usable nutrients and Qi (energy). Many schools of thought have been formed around this organ; the premise being that the proper functioning of the "middle" is the key to all aspects of vitality.

By taking into account a person’s constitution and varied symptoms, a treatment plan is designed specifically for the individual to bring their "middle" back into harmony and optimize the proper functioning of the digestive system. A variety of techniques can be used during treatment including acupuncture, lifestyle/dietary recommendations and energetic exercises to restore digestive health.

Treatment for Yin (or cold) type Diarrhea
Cold type of diarrhea is usually related to longstanding internal disharmonies or deficiencies. These disharmonies come from many sources, including irregular eating habits, emotional patterns like worry and frustration, congenital digestive weakness, etc. The tongue is characteristically swollen, flabby, or pale. The tongue coating may thicken with internal Dampness, which is often consequent to this condition. The onset is usually gradual, the odor mild, and the stool may only be loose. There may be mucous or undigested food in the stool. For cold type of chronic diarrhea, the Chinese herbal Medicine and acupuncture are excellent choice. It's safe and gentle for long-term use.

Treatment for Yang (or hot) type Diarrhea
Hot type of diarrhea is generally caused by an external pathogen such as a bacteria, virus, fungus, or other microorganism. The onset is usually sudden, the odor strong, and may be accompanied by cramping or blood in the stool. The pulse is often rapid, the tongue body may be red or the coating yellowish. This is typical of dysenteric diarrhea caused by drinking or eating contaminated food. For hot type of acute diarrhea, with or without vomiting, Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine can stop diarrhea plus other symptoms, including epigastric or abdominal fullness and bloating, belching, abdominal cramps, indigestion, frontal headache, poor appetite and hiccups.
