According to the theory of traditional Chinese medicine, endometriosis is usually caused by mental depression, unsmooth flow of qi, retention of blood stasis; or by invasion of pathogenic cold in the uterus during menstruation and after delivery; or by improper sexual intercourse and consumption of kidney qi; or by weakness of visceral qi and unsmooth flow of qi and blood; or by flow of blood into the thoroughfare and conception vessels as well as uterine collaterals during menstruation and delivery: or by operational wound and impairment of the thoroughfare and conception vessels leading to abnormal flow of blood and blood stasis.  Prolonged retention of blood stasis may transform into heat or lead to abdominal mass.

According to the theory of traditional Chinese medicine, there are some patterns of syndrome that lead to endometriosis.
(1) Syndrome of kidney asthenia and blood stasis
(2) Syndrome of cold coagulation and blood stagnation
(3) Syndrome of qi stagnation and blood stasis
(4) Syndrome of heat stagnation and blood stasis
