Pelvic inflammation refers to the inflammation of the interior reproductive organs and the connective tissues and pelvic peritoneum around. Clinically it is either acute or chronic. Pelvic inflammation is usually caused by weakness, improper caring, infection of pathogenic toxin and retention of damp-heat in the uterus and uterine collaterals during menstruation or after delivery. At the early stage it is marked by struggle between damp-heat and blood and qi, constant accumulation and fumigation of damp-heat as well as manifestations of acute inflammation.
Prolonged duration will turn into asthenia of the healthy qi and sthenia of pathogenic factors, marked by manifestations of chronic inflammation and acute seizure. The clinical manifestations are frequent lower abdominal pain, fever, leukorrhea and even pyogenic mass. Pelvic inflammation pertains to the conceptions of abdominal pain, invasion of heat into the blood chamber, leukorrhagia and abdominal mass in TCM.
