Polycystic ovary syndrome is marked by chronic anovulation, amenorrhea or scanty menorrhea, sterility, obesity, pilosity and bilateral cystic enlargement of ovary. It usually occurs among women ranging from 20 to 30 of age and is one of the commonly encountered gynecological diseases. It pertains to the conceptions of amenorrhea, irregular menstruation and sterility in TCM.
This disease is mainly caused by congenital weakness or early marriage, excessive sexual life and consumption of kidney qi; or by obesity or excessive intake of greasy and rich food or intemperance of food leading to impairment of the spleen and stomach and endogenous dampness; or by retention of blood after delivery, depression or impairment of the liver due to rage, stagnation of liver qi and qi stagnation and blood stasis; or by transformation of fire from prolonged stagnation leading to disharmony between qi and blood. All these factors may result in dysfunction of the viscera, disorder of qi and blood, obstruction of the meridians, accumulation of phlegm and dampness and abnormal accumulation in the thoroughfare vessel which lead to polycystic ovary syndrome.
