    Clinical manifestations show that the disease should pertain to "Huogan" or "Huoyang" (acute scleritis) in traditional Chinese medicine. In most cases, hyperactivity of lung heat and stagnancy of qi's activities accumulates up to the bulbar conjunctiva, thus giving rise to the disease. When the concerned meridian is obstructed by the interior retention of pathogenic damp-heat and attack of pathogenic wind, the lung qi fails to flow freely and pathogenic factors retain in the bulbar conjunctiva, eventually bringing about this disease. It may also be caused by deficient fire. For example, if the impairment of yin by lung heat results in deficiency of lung yin which causes fire hyperactivity and yin deficiency, the bulbar conjunctiva is harassed and episleritis may occur.
