The disease is called "Jihouyin" (acute laryngitis with aphonia) in TCM. Due to the attack by pathogenic wind and heat or wind and cold, the lung is obstructed by pathogenic factors. This will cause the lung to lose its dispersing and descending functions. In this case, the lung qi cannot flow smoothly to reach the throat upwards for phonation. This is how the disease occurs in most cases.
Most cases of laryngitis are temporary and improved after the underlying cause gets better. Causes of acute laryngitis include:
1. Viral infections similar to those that cause a cold
2. Vocal strain, caused by yelling or overusing your voice
3. Bacterial infections, such as diphtheria, although this is rare
