If the liver fails to store blood and regulate qi and blood, stagnation of qi and blood will occur. If the stagnation lasts long, it will transform into fire. The excessive fire gives rise to internal wind, leading to the syndrome. Besides, deficiency of blood generates wind and loss of nourishment of muscles, causing involuntary twisting of neck, shrug, abdominal convulsion, athetosis and convulsion of muscles. Also, blood deficiency of the liver makes the heart lose its nourishment, leading to restlessness. Finally, adverse qi flow of the liver and the dysfunction of the spleen in transportation and transformation result in internal generation of phlegm. When phlegm reversely rises to the brain and disturbs the mind, then involuntary convulsion, shout and coprophasia will occur.
