As AIDS patients' immune function is seriously defective and the clinical manifestation is deficiency of healthy qi, strengthening healthy qi should be taken as the main principle in the treatment. This disease is also apt to be complicated by many kinds of fatal opportunistic infection so that there often appear acute symptoms of secondary aspect of the disease. At this time urgent measures should be taken to treat the symptoms of secondary aspect. At the early stage of Aids, healthy qi is usually deficient with pathogenic factors hanging on in the body, therefore the treatment should be strengthening healthy qi and eliminating the pathogenic factor at the same time. During the intermediate stage, phlegm and stasis are often accompanied with toxic heat.

The methods of clearing away heat and toxic substance, resolving phlegm, removing stasis, and dissipating mass should be used and supplemented by strengthening healthy qi. During the late stage, as the disease has been protracted, healthy qi is seriously deficient and there are often complications of superficial nodules and tumors, therefore strengthening healthy qi should be used as the major method and supplemented with some medicines for eliminating pathogenic factors.

Essentials for Diagnosis
(1)A history of homosexuality or multipartner heterosexuality; the spouse's or sexual partners' antibody against HIV positive; a history of taking drugs through intravenous injection; having used blood product of factor Ⅷ or blood without anti-HIV test; a history of contact with AIDS patients or with HIV-infected persons; or a history of syphilis, gonorrhoea, nongonococcal urethritis, etc.

(2) Clinical manifestations of the upper respiratory tract infection such as fever, lassitude, sore throat, and general malaise; headache, rash, meningocephalitis, or acute polyneuritis in some cases; lymphadenectasis in the neck, armpit and occiput, and splenomegaly.
