Causes of Cirrhosis in TCM

Liver cirrhosis is the final outcome of diffuse inflammation of the liver, degeneration and necrosis of the liver cells and proliferation of fibrous tissue due to various causes. According to TCM, liver cirrhosis is categorized as "Gan Yu"(stagnation of liver-qi), "Ji Ju"(Aggregation), "Pi Kuai"(mass in the abdomen), "Gu Zhang" (hepatosplenomegaly), etc.

The goal of the Traditional Chinese Medicine for Liver Cirrhosis is to maintain the conditions in the compensated phase in case of its worsening into the de-compensated phase. The organ systems of human body primarily affected by liver cirrhosis are the liver, spleen and kidney. The main pathogenic factors of liver cirrhosis in TCM include:
