Eyewashes
Commercial eye drops eliminate the redness because of a decongestant that constricts the blood vessels. Using these drops on a regular basis can worsen the problem. The blood vessels will enlarge again in less and less time. Make your own eye drops from the following herbs, or just bathe your eyes with these eyewashes.
Eyebright
To make an eyebright eyewash, add 1 ounce of the whole dried herb eyebright to 1 pint of boiling-hot water and let it steep for 10 minutes. Strain the mixture thoroughly through a superfine strainer or through unbleached muslin. Wait until it's cool enough to use. Add 3 drops of tincture of eyebright to a tablespoon of boiled water and wait until it's cool enough to use.
Chamomile
Add 1 teaspoon of dried chamomile flowers to 1 cup of just-boiled water. Steep for five minutes and strain the mixture thoroughly through a superfine strainer or through unbleached muslin. Wait until it's cool enough to use. Add 12 drops of tincture of chamomile to 1 cup of boiling-hot water. Wait until it's cool enough to use.
Fennel Seeds
Add 1 teaspoon of crushed fennel seeds to 1 cup of boiling-hot water. Steep for five minutes and strain the mixture thoroughly through a superfine strainer or through unbleached muslin. Wait until it's cool enough to use.
Carrots
Carefully wash a bunch of carrots and cut off the tops. Place a handful of the clean carrot tops in a jar of distilled hot water. Let it stand. When its cool, use the carrot water as an eyewash. You can also drink the remaining liquid. This drink should help your eyes and also help strengthen your kidneys and bladder.
Mix 1 drop of lemon juice in 1 ounce of warm distilled water and use it as an eyewash. It's particularly effective when your eyes have been exposed to dust, cigarette smoke, harsh lights and chemical compounds in the air.
