Elucidation:
This syndrome is caused by deficiency cold in the thoroughfare vessel and conception vessel and blood stasis, .which further affects blood generation and leads to heat. It should be treated by means of warming meridians to dispel cold, removing stasis and nourishing blood and with supplementary method of nourishing yin and clearing away heat. Ingredient No. 1 and No. 6 act as monarch drugs, which can warm meridians, dispel cold, and promote blood circulation. No. 2, No. 4 and No. 3 are used as minister drugs to promote blood flow, remove blood stasis, nourish blood and regulate menstruation. No. 8 bears the action of promoting blood flow and removing blood stasis, and clearing away heat from blood, while No. 7 and
No. 12 possess the function of nourishing blood and yin, moistening dryness and arresting bleeding. No. 5, No. 10, No. 11 and No. 9 can supplement qi and invigorate the spleen, warm the middle-energizer and regulate the stomach so as to promote transformation and digestion. The above seven ingredients play the part of adjuvant drugs. No. 10 also serves as guiding drug to mediate properties of other drugs. All ingredients together imply moistening action in warming action as well as tonic action in purgative action. Thus, this recipe is warm but not dry, and purgative but not drastic in nature.
Cautions:
This syndrome belongs to simultaneous occurrence of cold and heat, deficiency and excess syndromes, manifesting chiefly cold accumulation and blood stasis. Thus this recipe is contraindicated for cases with excess heat marked by feverish sensation in palms, sores and chest, reddened tongue and rapid pulse.
