Administration:
Grind the above drugs into fine powder and make it into pills, take 6 -9 g each time and twice or three times daily with warm boiled water. Or prepare the above drugs into decoction with dosages in proportion to the original recipe.

Actions:
Promoting the circulation of qi to relieve fullness, and strengthening the spleen and harmonizing the stomach.

Clinical Application:
This recipe is indicated for syndromes of combination of cold and heat and qi stagnation due to deficiency of the spleen, marked by epigastric and abdominal fullness, no appetite, lassitude and weakness, loose stool, greasy yellowish fur, and thready pulse. It is applicable to chronic gastritis, chronic bronchitis, gastric neurosis and others, which are chiefly manifested as epigastric fullness, poor appetite, lassitude, and greasy yellowish fur, and are ascribed as simultaneous occurrence of cold and heat with excess and heat syndrome being dominant.

In case of marked interior cold with preference for warmth and aversion to cold, reduce the dosage of the last ingredient and increase that of No. 1 instead or add Gaoliangjiang (Rhizoma Alpiniae Officinarum) and Rougui (Cortex Cinnamomi) to warm the middle-energizer and dispel cold.

Elucidation:
The syndrome results from combination of cold and heat, and deficiency and excess. This is the result of deficiency of the spleen-yang and disorder of qi activity concomitant with damp heat. It should be treated by promoting the flow of qi to relieve fullness, and strengthening the spleen and stomach. Ingredient No. 9 acts as monarch drug to promote the flow of qi and relieve fullness.

No. 8 functions as minister drug with the effect of descending qi and relieves fullness. The combination of both is meant to double the effect of relieving fullness by regulating the circulation of qi. No. 10 is capable of clearing away heat and dampness, No. 6 regulating the stomach, and No. 1 warming the middle-energizer and dispelling cold, the combination of which achieves the result of adjusting cold and heat with pungent and bitter drugs.

No. 3 possesses the action of promoting digestion and regulating the stomach, while No. 7, No. 5, No. 4 and No. 2 bear the effect of reinforcing the spleen, eliminating dampness and regulating the middle-energizer, the five drugs serving as adjuvant drugs. No. 2 also plays the role guiding drug to mediate drug properties. The compatibility of all ingredients achieves the result of both reducing and reinforcement, both warming and clearing, with emphasis laid on reducing and clearing effects.

Cautions:
This should not be used for qi stagnation of the spleen and stomach without manifestation as deficiency symptom of the middle-energizer.
