Ingredients:
No.1 Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae) (fried withwine) 15 g
No.2 Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis) (fried withwine) 15 g
No.3 Jupi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae) 6 g
No.4 Shenggancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) 6 g
No.5 Xuanshen (Radix Scrophulariae) 6 g
No.6 Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri) 6 g
No.7 Jiegeng (Radix Platycodi) 6 g
No.8 Lianqiao (Fructus Forsythiae) 3 g
No.9 Banlangen (Radix Isatidis) 3 g
No.10 Mabo (Lasiosphaera seu Calvatia) 3 g
No.11 Niubangzi (Fructus Arctii) 3 g
No.12 Bohe (Herba Menthae) 3 g
No.13 Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus) 2 g
No.14 Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae) 2 g
Administration:
Decoct the above drugs for oral use; or grind them into fine powder and take frequently with boiled water.
Actions:
Clearing away heat and toxic material and dispelling wind and other pathogenic factors.
Clinical Application:
This recipe is used to treat swollen head due to infection marked by aversion to cold, fever, flushed swollen face and head, sore throat, thirst with preference for drinking, red tongue with yellowish fur, superficial and rapid forceful pulse. It is applicable to parotitis, facial erysipelas, acute tonsillitis, and other diseases due to wind heat and toxins, manifesting chiefly flushed swelling in the face and head and superficial rapid pulse. In case of complicated orchitis due to parotitis, add Chuanlianzi (Fructus Meliae Toosendan) and Longdancao (Radix Gentianae) to purge away damp-heat from the liver meridian. In case of constipation, add wine-prepared Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei) to descend heat.
Elucidation:
The syndrome results from exogenous wind-heat and seasonal pathogenic factors accumulating in the upper energizer and further affecting head and face. It should be treated by clearing away heat and toxin and dispelling wind and other pathogenic factors. Ingredients No. 1 and No. 2, in larger amount and prepared with wine, play the role of monarch drug with the effect of dispelling heat-toxin in the upper energizer. Ingredients No. 11, No. 8, No. 12 and No. 13 act together as minister drug, dispelling wind-heat that affects head and face, removing toxin and resolving mass. Ingredients No. 5, No. 10, No. 9, No. 7 and No. 4 have the function of removing heat-toxin from the throat, and No. 3 regulating qi to remove obstruction and subdue swelling, all serving as adjuvant drug.
Ingredients No. 14 and No. 6 play the part of guiding drug to dispel pathogenic wind-heat and to assist the other drugs in reaching the face and head to remove pathogenic heat there. All the drugs in combination achieve the purpose of clearing away heat and dispelling wind, ascending and descending drugs to the affected site. Thus this recipe is very effective in treating syndromes manifesting excessive accumulation of pathogenic heat and toxin in the upper energizer.
Cautions:
Some ointment with the action of clearing away heat and toxin may be applied externally and locally to enhance the effect of subduing swelling and relieving pain as well.
