Clinical Application:
This recipe is indicated for cough due to cold retention, marked by cough with much thin whitish sputum, fullness in the chest, glossy whitish fur and taut smooth pulse. It is applicable to chronic bronchitis and pulmonary emphysema, which are ascribed to cold retention in the interior with cough and thin clear sputum. In case of copious phlegm with nausea, add Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae) to reduce phlegm and relieve nausea. In case of qi ascending adversely, add Guizhi (Rarnulus Cinnamomi) to descend the adverse rising qi. In case of severe cough with dyspnea, add Xingren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum) and Houpo (Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis) to send down qi and relieve dyspnea.

Elucidation:
The syndrome results from deficiency of the spleen-yang, leading to generation of endogenous cold and dysfunction of the spleen in transportation and transformation, and retention of dampness in the lung. This should be treated by warming the lung and resolving phlegm-fluid. No. 3 functions as monarch drug to warm the lung and dispel cold so as to eliminate phlegm as well as to warm and activate the spleen-yang in order to eliminate dampness.

No. 4 is capable of warming the lung and dispelling cold, while No. 1 bears the function of reinforcing the spleen and eliminating dampness.
Both are used as minister drugs, which can not only remove phlegm but also prevent its generation. Used as adjuvant drug, No. 5 has the function of preserving the lung-qi so as to stop coughing and achieves both astringent and dispersive actions when in compatibility with No. 4 and No. 3, thus preventing the consumption of the lung-qi. No. 2, as the guiding drug, mediates drug properties and regulates the middle-energizer. This recipe is effective for warming cold-fluid retention and has both warming and dispersing effects.

Both this recipe and the Xiao Qinglong Tang comprise the four ingredients of No. 4, No. 3, No. 5 and No. 2 with the action of warming the lung and removing retention and are used for the treatment of cold-fluid retention in the interior, cough and dyspnea with thin sputum. This recipe has No. 3 as the monarch drug, and, in compatibility with No. 1 that may reinforce the spleen so as to prevent the regeneration of phlegm, is specially designed for yin excess due to yang deficiency with cold-fluid retaining in the lung. The latter, however, takes Mahuang (Herba Ephedrae) and Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi) as monarch drugs, thus possesses the effect of both warming the lung and removing retention and relieving the exterior syndrome and dispelling cold. It has the effects of treating both the exterior and interior syndromes and is indicated for attack by wind-cold and retention of cold-fluid.
