It is applicable to such diseases with thick yellowish sputum as pneumonia, acute bronchitis or acute attack of chronic bronchitis and others, which pertain to phlegm-heat syndrome. In case of excessive heat in the lung with feverish body and thirst, add Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) and Zhimu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae) to clear away heat from the lung.

In case of excessive phlegm, add Tianhuafen (Radix Trichosanthis) and Yuxingcao (Herba Houttuyniae) to enhance the action of clearing away heat and removing phlegm. In case of constipation due to heat accumulation, add Zhidahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei Praeparata) to descend and purge away heat and relieve constipation.

Elucidation:
The syndrome is caused by heat in the lung, which scorches and converts body fluid into phlegm and further leads to obstructed flow of qi and dysfunction of the lung. This should be treated by clearing away heat to remove phlegm, regulating the flow of qi and arresting cough. No. 7 is good at clearing away heat and removing phlegm and acts as monarch drug. No. 3 can purge away fire from the lung and No. 1 clear away heat from the lung and remove phlegm, which are used as minister drugs and promote the effect of the monarch drug in this respect.

No. 5 and No. 2 bear the effect of regulating the flow of qi to relieve fullness and remove phlegm, while No. 6 possesses the function of reinforcing the spleen and inducing diuresis so that phlegm is never generated. No. 4 is capable of descending the adverse flow of qi to relieve cough, while No. 8 has the function of eliminating dampness and removing phlegm. These five ingredients play the role of adjuvant drugs. Ginger juice is meant to strengthen the effect of removing phlegm on the one hand, and to reduce the toxic effect of No. 8 on the other.

Cautions:
Cold in nature, this recipe should be used with caution for debilitated patients with loose bowels due to spleen-deficiency.
