Ingredients:
No. 1 Beimu (Bulbus Fritillariae) 5 g;
No. 2 Gualou (Fructus Trichosanthis) 3 g;
No. 3 Tianhuafen (Radix Trichosanthis) 2.5 g;
No. 4 Fuling (Poria) 2.5 g;
No. 5 Jupi (Exocarpium Citri Grandis) 2.5 g;
No. 6 Jiegeng (Radix Platycodi) 2.5 g.
Administration:
Decoct the above drugs in water for oral use.
Actions:
Moistening the lung, clearing away heat, resolving phlegm and relieving cough.
Clinical Application:
This recipe is indicated for cough due to dryness-phlegm, marked by cough, expectorating sputum with difficulty, dry mouth, lips and throat, thin whitish and dry fur, thready or thready rapid pulse. It is applicable to tuberculosis, pneumonia and others, which have the above symptoms, and are induced by dryness-phlegm. In case of excessive dryness and heat with dry and painful throat, add Xuanshen (Radix Scrophulariae), Maimendong (Radix Ophiopogonis) and Zhimu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae ) to enhance the action of clearing away heat and nourishing the lung as well as nourishing yin and promoting the production of body fluid.
If concomitant with attack by exogenous wind manifesting cough, itching throat and slight aversion to wind-cold, add Sangye (Folium Mori), Xingren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum) and Niubangzi (Fructus Arctii) to facilitate the flow of the lung-qi and relieve sore throat as well as to dispel pathogenic wind.
Elucidation:
The syndrome is caused by lung-dryness and consumption of body fluid, leading to the generation of phlegm. It should be treated by nourishing the lung and clearing away heat as well as eliminating phlegm and relieving cough. The first two ingredients have the above function and are used as monarch drugs. No. 3 acts as minister drug with the function of moistening dryness and promoting the production of body fluid as well as clearing away heat and removing phlegm. No. 5 has the effect of regulating the flow of qi so as to remove phlegm. No. 4 can stop the generation of phlegm because it is capable of reinforcing the spleen and inducing diuresis. No. 6 possesses the effect of facilitating the flow of the lung-qi, which plays the role of adjuvant drug together with No. 4 and No. 5.
Cautions:
This recipe is contraindicated for the hyperactivity of fire due to yin deficiency, concomitant with hectic fever, night sweating and dysphoria with feverish sensation in chest, palms and soles.
