Bacillary dysentery is an infectious disease of the intestinal tract caused by bacteria of the genus Shigella and is spread by contact with a patients or carriers or through food or water contaminated by their feces. It commonly occurs in summer and fall. Fever, abdominal pain, diarrhea, tenesmus and bloody purulent stools are major manifestations. In TCM it is a kind of epidemic dysentery and treated with the therapeutic principle of clearing dampness and heat and restoring the function of the intestines.

Treatment
1. Tianshu (ST25)
Point injection is applied on left Tianshu with 5 ml 5% Novocain ( half dose for child ) every other day.

2. Zusanli (ST36)
Zusanli on both sides are used for point injection with 4 ml berberine injection on each point, which is applied every 6 hours at the beginning and then twice a day after the condition is improved till the patient is completely cured.

3. Shenque (RN8)
Circling moxibustion with moxa stick is applied on Shenque (RN8) till the patient has warm feeling inside of the abdomen, less or absent abdominal pain.

4. Dachangshu (BL25)
The fine needle is employed to be punctured Dachangshu (BL25) and manipulated till needling feeling reaches to the foot or lower abdomen, and then remained for 5- 10 minutes.

5. Yinjiao (RN7)
The suspending moxibustion is applied to Yinjiao for 1-2 hours.

Note
Unlike the common diarrhea, bacillary dysentery, characterized by acute onset and serious symptoms, is better to be needled 2-4 times a day at the beginning and is reduced in treating frequency after the condition is improved.
