Scrofula (Scrophula or Struma) refers to a form of tuberculosis, affecting the lymph nodes of the neck in one or two sides. It is commonly seen in children and treated with the herbs for nourishing yin and clearing deficient heat, and resolving phlegm and removing the swollen lymph nodes.
Treatment
1. Zhoujian (EX-UE1)
To those with strong body-build, direct moxibustion with finger-tip sized moxa cone (with little muskiness) can be used on Zhoujian ( EX-UE1 ) in either side for one cone. Both Zhoujian (EX-UE1 ) are applied alternately. The blister on treating area should be covered with gauze till it is completely absorbed naturely. To those with weak constitution or those sensitive to pain, indirect moxibustion with ginger for 3-5 cones in each session can be employed. The blister should be treated same as that due to direct moxibustion. It is suitable for scrofula without purulency formed.
2. Local swollen spots
Fire needling can be used on 1-2 swollen spots each session. The needling hole is left without any treating. The swollen area will get smaller or be disappeared. It is also suitable for scrofula without purulency formed.
3. Quchi (LI11)
A 6 cun needle, made of gold, is punctured into Quchi ( LI 11 ) opposit to affecting side, then inserted horizontally towards Binao (LI14), which is applied every day for 12 times as one therapeutic duration.
Note
Aftter the application of fire needle or long needle, the swollen lymph node (Beginning stage of the scrofula) will be improved in size of affecting area and local pain.
