Acupuncture Point Yangxi (LI5)
Location:
Stick up the thumb, on the radial side of the dorsum of wrist, a depression between tendons of m. extensor pollicis longus and m. extensor pollicis brevis, at the radiocarpal articulation.
Function:
Clearing away heat and expelling wind.
Regional Anatomy:
Skin-subcutaneous tissue-between short extensor muscle tendon of thumb and long extensor muscle tendon of thumb-front part of long radial extensor muscle of wrist.
In the superficial layer, there are the branches of the cephalic vein and the superficial branches of the radial nerve. In the deep layer, there are the branches or tributaries of the radial artery and vein.
Indications:
Headache, pain and swelling of the eye, toothache, sore throat, and pain in the wrist.
Prescription:
Combined use with PianliLI6 (Pianli (LI 6) Luo-Connecting Point) and LiequeLU7 (Lieque (LU7)Luo-Connecting Point the Eight Confluent Point) for treatment of carpal tenosynovitis; with XiaguanST7 (Xiaguan (ST7)) for treatment of toothache; and with ErjianLI2 (Erjian (LI2) Ying-Spring Point), SanjianLI3 (Sanjian (LI 3) Shu-Stream Point), DalingPC7, QianguSI2 (Qiangu (SI 2) Ying-Spring Point), ShangxingGV23 (Shangxing (GV23)) for treatment of ophthalmalgia.
Methods:
Insert the needle perpendicularly 0.3-0.5 cun deep; needling response: local distension and soreness; moxibustion: using 3-5 moxa-cones, or mild moxibustion for 15 min.
