Acupuncture Point Shanglian (LI9)
Location:
Incline the palm, flex the elbow; draw a line connecting YangxiLI5 (Yangxi (LI5) Jing-River Point) and QuchiLI11 (Quchi (LI11) He-Sea Point), a spot on this line, 3/4 apart from YangxiLI5 (LI5), or 1/4 apart from
QuchiLI11 (LI11).
Function:
Recuperating the bowel and the stomach, and restoring normal menstruation in cases of pathological amenorrhea.
Regional Anatomy:
Skin-subcutaneous tissue-posterior part of long radial extensor muscle of wrist-short radial extensor muscle of wrist-supinator muscle-long abductor muscle of thumb.
In the superficial layer, there are the lateral and posterior cutaneous nerves of the forearm and the superficial vein. In the deep layer, there is the supinator muscle perforated by the deep branches of the radial nerve.
Indications:
Aching of the shoulder and arm, motor impairment of the upper limbs, numbness of the hand and arm, borborygmus, and abdominal pain.
Prescription:
Combined use with ZusanliST36 (Zusanli (ST 36) He-Sea Point) for treatment of enteritis; with HuantiaoGB30 (Huantiao (GB30 )) for treatment of hemiplegia; with XialianLI8 (Xialian (LI8)) for treatment of frequent and scanty urination with continuous dripping, and Diarrhea.
Methods:
Puncture perpendicularly or obliquely 0.5-1 cun deep; needling response: local sensation of distension and soreness radiating towards the hand; moxibustion: using 3-5 moxa-cones, or mild moxibustion for 15 min.
