Acupuncture Point Jiache (ST6)
Location:
1. Sit upright or lie prostrate on one's side; one finger-breadth anterior to and 0.4 cun directly above the angle of mandible. 2. With teeth clenched, at the prominence of m. masseter ,
with teeth relaxed, when it is nipped by a finger, there are a pitting and a sensation of soreness and distension.
Function:
Expelling wind and activating the collaterals, and clearing relieving lockjaw.
Regional Anatomy:
Skin-subcutaneous tissue-masseter muscle.
There are the branches of the auricular nerve and the marginal mandibular branches of the facial nerve in this area.
Indications:
facial paralysis, toothache, swelling of the cheek and face, mumps, trismus.
Prescription:
Combined use with XiaguanST7 (Xiaguan (ST7)) for treatment of mandibular arthritis ; with SibaiST2 (Sibai (ST2)) and XiaguanST7 (ST7) for treatment of trigeminal neuralgia; with BaihuiGV20 (Baihui (GV20)), ChengjiangCV24 (Chengjiang (CV24)) and HeguLI4 (Hegu (LI4) Yuan-Source Point) for treatment of luxation of temporomandibular joint; with TianrongSI17 (ianrong (SI 17)), XiaguanST7 (ST7), TaiyangEXHN5 (EX-HN5) and HeguLI4 (LI4) for treatment of toothache; with HeguLI4 (LI4), DayingST5 (Daying (ST5)), YifengTE17 (Yifeng (TE 17)) and FengchiGB20 (Fengchi (GB20)) for treatment of parotitis.
Methods:
Insert the needle perpendicularly 0.3-0.5 cun deep, or subcutaneously with the tip of the needle directed towards DicangST4 (Dicang (ST4)). needling response: local sensation of distension and soreness; moxibustion: using 3-5 moxa-cones, or mild moxibustion for 15 min.
