(1) Surrounding Moxibustion with Moxa Stick
Point: Shenque (Ren 8)
Technique: The patient is in a supine position. Surrounding moxibustion with a moxa stick is applied on Shenque (Ren 8) for 30 to 60 minutes until the patient feels warmth with the abdomen and the abdominal pain is reduced or disappears. The distance between the body and the ignited moxa stick is changeable depending on the patient’s tolerance. The method is for bacillary dysentery.
(2) Direct Moxibustion with Moxa Cone
Points: Hegu (LI 4), Guanyuan (Ren 4), Pishu (BL20) and Tianshu (ST 25)
Technique: Twenty moxa cones are applied on Guanyuan (Ren 4), five cones on Tianshu (ST25) and Hegu (LI 4), respectively, at first. Then, 20 cones are placed on Pishu (BL 20). The method is for dysentery of the cold and damp type, manifested as a bloody and pus stool.
(3) Indirect Moxibustion with Garlic
Points: Qihai (Ren 6) and Ah-shi points (4 cun bilateral to Ren 6)
Technique: Three slices of garlic, 2.5 to 3 mm thick, are placed on the points and three to five moxa cones are required on each point. The fresh garlic slice is replaced when the previous one is burnt. The method is for acute dysentery.
