(1) Mild-Warming Technique with Moxa Stick
Point: Specific point for diarrhea (located directly below the highest point of external malleolus at the junction of red and white skin).
Technique: Apply moxibustion with a moxa stick on both sides of points for 10 to 15 minutes each, two or three times a day. A total of 120 cases of patients with diarrhea (32 with infantile simple indigestion and 88 cases with acute enteritis) were treated. Through one to four days of treatment, the curative rate was 98.3%.
(2) Moxibustion with Moxa Cone
Points: Guanyuan (Ren 4), Tianshu (ST 25), Pishu (BL20) and Baihui (GV 20).
Technique: Apply more than 10 moxa cones on each point. It is used to treat diarrhea due to weakness of spleen qi and is given once a day.
(3) Moxibustion with Salt
Senque (CV 8)
Technique: Grind a certain amount of salt into fine powder, filling the umbilicus 0.5 to 1 cm above the surface. Put a 4-cm-diameter iron cover on the salt, and then moxa cones. Three to seven cones are used, and should be applied two or three times a day. A total of 748 cases with watery diarrhea were dealt with by a two-day course of treatment, with 680 cases cured ( 90.9%), 40 improved ( 5.3%), and 28 ineffective (3.8%).
(4) Moxibustion by Producing Pus
Points: Tianshu (ST 25) and Guanyuan (CV 4).
Technique: Make a moxa cone with fine moxa wool using a specially made model, each cone weighing 0.1 gm with a diameter of 0.7 cm at the bottom. Three to six cones are used on each point and pus should be formed. This method is indicated for chronic specific and Ulcerative Colitis.
(5) Moxibustion with Ginger
Points: ① Zhongwan (Ren 12) and Shenque (Ren 8). ② Guanyuan (Ren 4) and Tianshu (ST 25).
Technique: The two groups of points are applied in turn with moxibustion, five to seven cones as big as yellow bean or date kernel being used on each point. The treatment is given once a day, and 10 times make up one course with intervals of five days. It is mainly used to treat chronic diarrhea due to yang deficiency of spleen and kidney.
