Palpitation is a symptom when a patient feels subjectively the palpitation, uneasiness, liability to be scared or frightened and inability to sit or stand still. The disease occurs when a patient who usually has a diffident and timid character receives sudden stimulation, in which case the heart and mind are not at ease. The disease may also be due to insufficiency of heart blood leading to malnourishment of the heart; disturbance of the heart and mind by hyperactive heart fire where the kidney yin is deficient and water fails to check fire; hypo-activity of heart yang and the upward perversion of pathogenic fluid. The treatment should be to calm down the heart and mind. The points of Hand Shaoyin and Jueyin meridians are the main ones; such as Xinshu (BL15), Jueyinshu (BL14), Neiguan (PC6), Shenmen (HT 7) and Daling (PC7). If a patient has qi deficiency of the heart and gallbladder, Danshu (BL19), Juque (Ren 14), Tongli (HT5) and Qihai (Ren 6) should be added. If the patient has heart blood deficiency, Pishu (BL20), Geshu (BL17) and Zusanli (ST 36) should be added. If the patient has hypo-activity of heart yang, Tanzhong (CV17), Guanyuan (Ren 4) and Zusanli(ST 36) should be combined. The treatment discussed here can be taken as reference when the palpitation caused by various heart diseases and neurosis diagnosed by Western medical theory is treated.
