Western treatment
Factor V Leiden is an inherited disorder with no cure. However, we can treat the symptoms with a variety of medications called blood thinners (also called anticoagulants). These include:

Dabigatran.
Dabigatran is not specifically approved for use as a blood thinner, but it is useful because people using it don’t need to be monitored as they do with heparin and warfarin. Dabigatran interacts with some medications, so it may not be appropriate for your child.

Rivaroxaban.
Rivaroxaban is a blood thinner that doesn’t require close monitoring. It interacts with a variety of medications so it may not be appropriate for your child.

Heparin.
This is a relatively fast-acting and effective blood thinner, but it can cause excessive bleeding. Your child must be closely monitored to guard against bleeding if this drug is used.

Warafarin.
Warfarin is an effective blood thinner, but it interacts with a variety of other medications. It may cause birth defects, so teenage girls who are sexually active may need to use a different medication.
