Syndrome differentiation and treatment
The sites of pathological changes of the disease lie in the larynx, lung and stomach. The external pathogenic factors include pathogenic wind and heat. The internal pathgenic factor exists in the fact that when the lung and stomach have stagnated heat, and then the internal and external pathogenic factors will intermingle to attack the pharyngolarynx upwards, causing the disease. The commonly-seen syndromes of acute tonsillitis include wind and heat invading the lung, excessive heat of the lung and stomach. Treatment of the syndrome of wind and heat invading the lung should mainly include dispelling wind and clearing away heat, relieving sore throat and diminishing swelling; treatment of the syndrome of excessive heat of the lung and stomach lies in clearing away heat and removing toxin, relieving sore throat and diminishing swelling.

1. Syndrome of wind and heat invading the lung
Main symptoms and signs: Sore throat, dysphagia, pain which is worsened when the patient swallows or coughs, burning sensation of the larynx, congestion of the palatoglossal arch and tonsil discovered by examination, simultaneous existence of fever, aversion to cold, headache, nasal obstruction, lassitude, cough with sputum, red lingual margin and tip, whitish thin or yellowish fur,floating and rapid pulse.
Therapeutic methods: Dispelling wind and clearing away heat, diminishing swelling and relieving sore throat.

2. Syndrome of excessive heat of the lung and stomach
Main symptoms and signs: Severe pharyngeal pain with the ear root and the submaxillary part involved, dysphagia with obstructive sensation, marked red swelling of tonsil with yellow-white purulent spots which gradually form the false membrane, red swelling of isthmus of lances and enlargement of the submaxillary lymph with marked tenderness when the disease is severe, fever,thirst with inclination to drink, cough with yellowish sticky sputum, foul breath, constipation, dark urine, red tongue with yellowish thick fur, full-large and rapid pulse.
Therapeutic methods: Clearing away heat and removing toxin, relieving sore throat and diminishing swelling.
