Infantile convulsion may occur in all children, but prevails at neonatal stage and in the following 2 to 3 years after birth. When the invasion of seasonal exogenous factors into the body from the exterior, it may cause stagnation which is transformed into fire, resulting in phlegm. In this case, excessive heat gives rise to acute infantile convulsion. Besides, improper diet may cause stagnation in the intestine and stomach while phlegm, fire and dampness mist the pericardium, giving rise to unconsciousness.
Also sudden terror and fear may result in convulsion due to adverse flow of qi and blood stiring liver-wind. In chronic cases, the spleen and stomach are first impaired, the liver reversely subjugates the spleen, causing chronic infantile convulsion due to the asthenia of the spleen. Besides, when the asthenia and cold of the body cause deficiency of yang qi of the spleen and stomach, the tendons and meridians lose warming, resulting in clonic convulsion. In addition, when lingering pathogenic heat scorches the kidney yin, it will cause internal up-stirring of asthenic wind, giving rise to spasm of muscle.
