The other smaller shoulder joints are referred to by their specific names. The head of the upper arm bone sits on a very small and shallow socket in the shoulder blade. This allows for the shoulder's wide range of motion but makes it susceptible to injury. Because there is little bony stability, the shoulder relies greatly on connective tissue (e.g. ligaments, tendons, muscles) to hold the bones of the joint together and to stabilize the joint.
