Ingredients :
No.1  Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri) 9 g
No.2  Qianhu ( Radix Peucedani) 9 g
No.3  Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Ligustici Chuanxiong) 9 g
No.4  Zhike (Fructus Aurantii) 9 g
No.5  Qianghuo (Rhizoma et Radix Notopterygii) 9 g
No.6  Duhuo (Radix Angelicae Pubescentis) 9 g
No.7  Fuling (Poria) 9 g
No.8  Jiegeng (Radix Platycodi) 9 g
No.9  Renshen (Radix Ginseng) 9 g
No.10  Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) 5g

Administration:
Grind the drugs into coarse powder. Decoct 6 g of the powder with a small amount of Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) and Bohe (Herba Menthae).

Actions:
Replenishing qi and relieving exterior syndrome, expelling cold and dampness.

Clinical Application:
This recipe is indicated for qi deficiency due to attack by exogenous pathogenic factors, marked by aversion to cold, fever, headache, aching body, no perspiration, nasal obstruction, cough with whitish sputum, chest distress, pale tongue with whitish fur, superficial and weak pulse. It is applicable to common cold, bronchitis, allergic dermatitis, urticaria, eczema, sores, and ulcer, etc., which have the above symptoms and belong to qi deficiency due to exogenous wind, cold and dampness.

In the absence of vital-qi deficiency, subtract ingredient No. 9 or add Jingjie (Herba Schizonepetae) and Fangfeng (Radix Ledebouriellae) to expel exogenous pathogenic factors and relieving exterior syndrome, forming another recipe entitled Jingfang Baidu San. In case of cutaneous pruritus, add Chantui (Periostracum Cicadae) and Kushen (Radix Sophorae Flavescentis) to dispel wind, relieve itching, and clear away heat and dampness. At the onset of sores and ulcer, replace ingredient No. 9 with Jinyinhua (Flos Lonicerae) and Lianqiao (Fructus Forsythiae) to clear away heat and toxins and resolve mass.

Elucidation:
The syndrome is the result of weak constitution and attack by pathogenic wind, cold, and dampness, leading to the lung’s failure in dispersing and descending function. The method of replenishing qi and relieving exterior syndrome, and dispelling cold and dampness should be adopted. Ingredients No. 5 and No. 6 act as monarch drugs, dispersing pathogenic wind, cold and dampness. Ingredient No. 3, capable of eliminating pathogenic factors, removing obstruction in meridians and relieving pain, and No. 1, capable of eliminating pathogenic factors from muscles and skin, together play the part of minister drug.

Ingredients No. 8, No. 4, No. 2 and No. 7 are meant to disperse the lung-qi, resolve phlegm and relieve cough, and No. 9 has the function of replenishing qi and building up body resistance. These five ingredients together form the adjuvant drug. Ingredient No. 10 serves as guiding drug, mediating drug properties and helping No. 9 carry out its function. Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) and Bohe (Herba Menthae) are supposed to enhance the diaphoretic effect.
