A Pleural Effusion is the term used to describe fluid that accumulates in the chest around the outside of the lung. If to much accumulates there is not room for the lung to totally expand when you breathe in, part of the lung collapses then and you have difficulty breathing. Thoracentesis is the procedure they do to drain the fluid from around the lung so it can re expand when you breathe in.Usually they insert a needle into the area and drain the fluid off. The fluid can then be sent to the lab for diagnostic testing.
