Woodblock Portrait of Xue Ji
Xue Ji (1487-1559), styled Xinfu, alterna tive name Lizhai, was a native of Wuxian County (Suzhou), and was Imperial Physician between 1506 and 1521.  He was appointed Administrative Assistant in the Nanjing Imperial Academy of Medicine, and then became Commissioner, in charge of both the Nanjing and Beijing Academies. He resigned ca. 1540, reading widely in ancient and modern writings and deepening his learning for nearly 20 years. This is his portrait from Illustrated Eulogies of Medical Immortals (Yi xiao tuzan).
