It is applicable to typhoid fever, pyelonephritis, rheumatic arthritis, and others that pertain to accumulation of damp heat in the interior with dampness prevailing over heat. In case of marked exterior syndrome at the initial stage of damp heat syndrome, add Huoxiang (Herba Agastachis) and Xiangru (Herba Elsholtziae seu Moslae) to relieve exterior syndrome and eliminate dampness. In case of alternating chills and fever, add Qinghao (Herba Artemisiae Chinghao) and Caoguo (Fructus Tsaoko) to eliminate dampness.

Elucidation:
The syndrome is caused by the initial stage of damp-warm syndrome with more dampness than heat, leading to retention of heat due to obstruction of dampness. It should be treated by promoting qi function and eliminating damp heat. No. 1 can help disperse lung-qi in the upper-energizer. The lung controls qi of the whole body, qi transformation leads to dampness transformation. No. 4 is aromatic and can eliminate dampness and promote the flow of qi of the spleen and stomach, while No. 7 is bland and can remove dampness through urination.

The three eliminate damp heat separately from the three energizers, and serve together as monarch drugs. No. 8 and No. 6 possess the actions of promoting the circulation of qi and eliminating dampness, while No. 4 and the above two ingredients together regulate the stomach, the three being minister drugs. No. 5, No. 3 and No. 2 are capable of clearing away heat and eliminating dampness and help No. 7 eliminate damp heat, acting as adjuvant drugs.

Cautions: This recipe is not applicable for cases with bitter and dry mouth and greasy and yellowish fur.
