Decoction for Reinforcing Qi in the Middle Energizer

Source: Neiwaishang Bianhuo Lun (Differentiation on Endogenous and Exogenous Diseases).

Ingredients:
No.1 Huangqi (Radix Astragali seu Hedysari) 18 g
No.2 Zhigancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Praeparatae) 9 g
No.3 Renshen (Radix Ginseng) 6 g
No.4 Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) 3 g
No.5 Jupi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae) 6 g
No.6 Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae) 6 g
No.7 Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri) 6 g
No.8 Baizhu (Rhizorma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) 9 g

Administration:
Decoct the above drugs in water for oral application.

Actions:
Invigorating middle-energizer and replenishing qi, elevating the spleen-yang to improve the functional activities of qi and viscera.

Clinical Application:
This recipe is indicated for prolapse due to deficient qi, marked by poor appetite, lassitude, loose stool, fever with perspiration, thirst with preference for hot drinks, or prolapse of the rectum, prolapse of the uterus, protracted diarrhea, protracted dysentery, metrorrhagia and metrostaxis, pale and large tongue with thin whitish fur. It is applicable to visceral ptosis, chronic gastroenteritis, chronic dysentery, myasthenia gravis, chronic hepatitis, long-term low fever from unknown reasons, hypermenorrhea, and chyluria, which pertain to qi collapse due to deficiency of the middle-energizer. For visceral ptosis and myasthenia gravis, it is necessary to add Zhishi ( Fructus Aurantii Immaturus ) to lift qi of the middle-energizer.

If qi fails to control blood with the manifestation as hypermenorrhea, add Xianhecao (Herba Agrimoniae ) and Haipiaoxiao (Os Sepiellae seu Sepiae) to arrest bleeding. In case of turbid urine, add Qianshi (Semen Eurgales) and Yizhiren (Fructus Alpiniae Oxyphyllae) to arrest discharge of nutrient substances.

Elucidation:
The syndrome results from qi deficiency of the spleen and stomach, causing yang’s failure in ascent or even prolapse of middle-energizer qi. It should be treated by means of supplementing qi and lifting yang. The first ingredient, in larger dosage, reinforces qi c middle-energizer and lifts yang to strengthen the superficial resistance as monarch drug. Ingredients No. 3, No. 8 and No. 2 are used as minister drugs to replenish qi and strengthen the spleen, and combined with No. 1 to be  better such effects. Ingredient No. 4 help No. 3 and No.1 invigorate qi and nourish blood, and No. 5 can regulate qi and the stomach and make other drugs perform tonic action without stagnancy. Both serve as adjuvant drug. Ingredients No. 6 and No. 7, as guiding drug, bear the function of lifting collapsed middle-energizer qi.
 
Cautions:
This recipe is contraindicated for cases concomitant with dampness and manifesting greasy fur and smooth pulse, or those with fever due to yin deficiency.
