Aphonia is caused by invasion of pathogenic wind and heat leading to the lung qi failing to disperse; or mental depression, the liver qi stagnation being transformed into fire that affects the throat along the liver meridian; or yin deficiency of the lung and kidney resulting in lack of nourishment of the throat. The treatment principle is to benefit the lung qi to dispel the pathogenic factors and nourish yin to clear away the heat. The points are mainly selected from the Hand-Taiyin meridian, i.e., Futu (LI 18), Tianding (LI 17), Yuji (LU10) and Tongli (HT5). For wind cold involved, Hegu (LI 4), Lieque (LU7) and Fengchi (GB 20) are added; for wind heat involved, Quchi (LI 11), Hegu (LI 4) and Shaoshang (LU 11) are added; for the liver qi stagnation, Taichong (LR 3) and Yanglingquan (GB 34) are added; for yin deficiency, Sanyinjiao (SP6), Taixi (KI3) and Zhaohai (KI 6) are added. A reducing technique is applied for excess syndrome and reinforcing technique for deficiency syndrome. The treatments are applied based on such disease for acute and chronic laryngitis, strain of the vocal fold, vocal nodules and hysteric aphonia.
