Ingredients :
No. 1 Zhishi (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus)30 g;
No. 2 Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae)60 g.
Administration:
Grind the above drugs into fine powder and put it into boiled rice wrapped with lotus leaf (Folium Nelumbinis) and make them into pills. Take 5-10 g each time for oral dose and twice or 3 times daily with warm boiled water.
Actions:
Reinforcing the spleen and removing stagnated food.
Clinical Application:
This recipe is indicated for food stagnancy due to weakness of the spleen, marked by chest and epigastric stuffiness, no appetite, dyspepsia, or abdominal fullness and diarrhea. It is applicable to chronic gastritis, chronic enteritis, dyspepsia and others, which pertain to indigestion due to weakness of the spleen. In case of excessive deficiency of the spleen-qi, add Dangshen ( Radix Codonopsis Pilosulae ), Fuling ( Poria ) and Zhigancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Praeparatae) to supplement the spleen-qi In case of much stagnancy, add Shanzha (Fructus Crataegi ), Shenqu (Massa Fermentata Medicinalis ) and Maiya (Fructus Hordei Germinatus) to strengthen the effect of promoting digestion and removing stagnancy.
Elucidation:
The syndrome is caused by indigestion and obstructed flow of qi due to weakness of the spleen and stomach. It should be treated by reinforcing the spleen to remove stagnated food. No. 2 with larger dosage is meant to activate the spleen and eliminate dampness and used as monarch drug. No. 1 is capable of promoting the circulation of qi, removing stagnancy and relieving fullness and functions as minister drug. Putting fine powder into boiled rice wrapped with lotus leaf and making them into pills after lotus leaf is removed can nourish the spleen and stomach and ascend lucid yang so as to help No. 2 to reinforce the spleen and invigorate the stomach, acting as the adjuvant drug. The application of both brings aboutthe result of both removing stagnancy and reinforcing the spleen, with the latter prevailing over the former. Lotus leaf can lift up the lucid yang and No. 1 can descend turbid substances so that ascending and descending function of the spleen and stomach is restored.
